We were out on a walk close to the basketball courts and heard one of the team’s coaches shout across the court to the other team’s sideline. “Play fair!”
The other coach shouted back, “We are. Who do you think you are? The classic Caesar of basketball?”
The first coach was not happy with that response. “No, I just want your team to play fair!”
“I don’t know what your definition of that is, but I sure know what the definition of a Caesar is. And you’re being one right now.” The other coach stormed back to his sideline.
It was quite humorous for a few moments to watch these adult coaches act like kids. The shouting match continued.
“Play fair!”
“Caesar!”
“Play fair!”
“Caesar!”
“Play fair!”
The players were just standing with their mouths gaping wide as they watched their coaches behave in an completely immature and inappropriate way. Some parents went to the sidelines and told their kids to pack up their stuff so they could get out of there, eXcusing them from the disaster the game had turned into. We were laughing to ourselves from the walking path, but also felt so badly for the players and parents having to put up with their nonsense. It’s just a game, after all.
At this point the referee decided to just call the game. “We’re done.” He told the first coach to take his 7 players (those whose parents hadn’t already secured their children and left the court) to the North end of the court. He told the second coach to take his remaining 8 players to the West side of the court.
We continued walking, shaking our heads at the situation we had just witnessed, and hoping that some positive lessons could be learned from it along the way.
Just then, our phone buzzed because a new Geocache was published. We raced to the car to get the FTF and the smiley!
