About Osborne
Osborne Railway Station sits on the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors.
- The Outer Harbor railway line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
- The extension to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, strengthening access to port and coastal infrastructure.
- Osborne station opened in 1906, during a period of industrial growth in the region, helping connect workers to nearby factories, shipyards, and expanding port facilities.
The station and suburb are named after Captain R. W. Osborne, a well-known Port Adelaide mariner, whose connection to the maritime life of the area reflects the strong link between sea and rail that defines this region.
Today, the line continues to serve commuters travelling between the city and the coast, while the industrial heartbeat of Osborne still hums nearby. With major shipbuilding and defence projects in the area, this remains an important hub—just as it was over a century ago.
