Geocache Description:

History Lesson:

Located in Denison’s Loy Park, the Grayson County Frontier Village was established in 1966 to preserve North Texas heritage by relocating and protecting historic 19th-century homes and artifacts. The site features over a dozen restored structures, including pioneer cabins, a schoolhouse, and a jail wagon, showcasing life between 1830 and 1900.

Key Historical Aspects:

  • Origin: The project began in 1966 when citizens sought to save the 1800s-era "Nettie Bass" home in Sherman, leading to the creation of the village in Loy Park.
  • Structures: The village is a collection of historically significant, relocated buildings, including the 1840s era Bollock/Bass Houseand the Indian School.
  • Museum Collection: The museum, built in 1990, houses artifacts, mule-drawn farm tools, and documents covering early Grayson County life.
  • Activities: The attraction offers tours and hosts Living History Days with demonstrations of pioneer skills, such as blacksmithing

The site operates as a non-profit and offers a glimpse into Texas history when the region was part of Mexico.

Cache Information:

I originally wanted to incorporate the historical markers within Frontier Village into this cache. However, it costs roughly $7 to take the entire tour and see all of these amazing structures, and I did not want to make cachers do that. So, I did not use those markers for this cache, but I do encourage you to take the tour if you enjoy learning about history.
