About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

About Taperoo

Taperoo Railway Station sits on the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors.

  • The Outer Harbor railway line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
  • The extension through to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, strengthening access to the coastline and port facilities.
  • Taperoo station opened in 1924, originally under the name Silicate Siding, reflecting the industrial activity in the area at the time, before later being renamed as the suburb developed.

The name Taperoo is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal word meaning something akin to “calm” or “place of rest”—a fitting description for a suburb that balances suburban life with the nearby sea.

Today, the line continues to carry commuters and explorers alike, its tracks stitching together suburbs with a history that runs as deep as the rails themselves.

Stand here and you’ll notice the rhythm—trains arriving and departing like clockwork tides, connecting past and present in a steady, unbroken line.
