About Outer Harbor
Outer Harbor Railway Station is the terminus of the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors.
- The line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
- The extension through to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, creating a direct connection between the city and the state’s primary deep-water port.

This station has long been a gateway—welcoming travellers arriving by ship and sending others off toward the city. In earlier days, it connected directly with ocean liners and port traffic, making it a key interchange between rail and sea.
Today, it remains a vital part of the Adelaide suburban rail network, while still holding onto its identity as the end of the line. There’s something special about a terminus—the sense that beyond this point, only the ocean continues the journey.
