People everywhere read traditional European fairy and folk tales. Stories like Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood have delighted children and adults for generations. One Broadway musical, Into the Woods, has successfully brought some of the most notable characters together. It is a long-running show that offers a lighthearted yet thought-provoking look at what happens when wishes come true.
"Into the Woods is more than a simple fairy tale." Its "good" characters all have wishes, hopes, and dreams, just like the majority of people. These wishes eventually come true, but, like the fine print in a contract, there are conditions that are easy to overlook in the initial thrill of the moment.
The haunting message of the story is that we should be careful what we wish for. Most of us wish life could be better, but there is always a price to pay. In contrast to a typical fairy tale, it can't be all good—even if we get what we want at first, the consequences are waiting in the shadows.
