About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

Nyanda Station

Nyanda Railway Station was located on the Beenleigh line in Queensland, Australia, between Rocklea and Salisbury stations. The station was opened in 1885 under the name Nyanda Crossing.

The original station was deliberately positioned so that a single staff member could both operate the station and attend to the level crossing on Beaudesert Road, reflecting the modest passenger numbers and operational requirements at the time.

Through the 1940s and 1950s, the station primarily served workers employed at the adjacent Evans Deakin and Company industrial site (now closed).

In 1976, an overpass was constructed to carry Beaudesert Road over the railway line, permanently changing the station’s layout and access arrangements, and eliminating the need for road traffic to halt at the level crossing for trains.

During the late 1970s, most stations south of the Brisbane River were progressively modified, with platforms lengthened to accommodate SX sets and the newly introduced Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains. At Nyanda, the existing platform occupied all available space between Beaudesert Road and the industrial sidings at the northern end of the station, leaving no scope for extension.

As a result of these constraints, and coinciding with the opening of the Merivale Bridge, Nyanda Railway Station was closed in 1978.

Despite its closure, remnants of the abandoned station platform remain visible today, particularly between the running lines and to the north of the road crossing, offering tangible evidence of the station’s former presence. The alignment of the surviving platform sections, together with the overpass support standing where passengers once waited, provides a clear indication of the station’s original layout.

Crossing

If you need to cross the tracks, there is a train pedestrian crossing available close to GZ.
