About Peterhead
Peterhead Railway Station sits on the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors.
- The Outer Harbor railway line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
- The extension through to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, strengthening access to the coastline and port facilities.
- Peterhead station opened in 1915, around the time the line was extended, serving the growing residential community and those working in nearby port industries.
The suburb of Peterhead takes its name from the Scottish town of the same name, reflecting the heritage of many early settlers in the area.
Today, the station remains a convenient stop for commuters travelling between the city and the coast, quietly doing its job as trains come and go throughout the day.
Stand here and you’ll notice how the line feels settled—less about industry, more about community—yet still firmly connected to the same historic route that has served South Australia for well over a century.
