About Glanville
Glanville Railway Station sits on the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors—and this station is one of its most historically significant stops.
- The Outer Harbor railway line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
- Glanville station also dates back to 1856, making it one of the original stations on the line.
- The extension through to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, further enhancing the importance of this route.
Glanville was once a key junction, with a branch line running toward Semaphore, making it an important interchange point in the early days of South Australian rail travel.
The station and suburb are named after Captain John Hart, whose residence “Glanville Hall” lent its name to the area—linking the station to the broader story of early colonial development and maritime trade.
Today, while quieter than in its heyday, Glanville still carries that sense of importance. The tracks here have seen everything from early steam locomotives to modern commuter trains, all passing through the same historic corridor.
Stand here and you’re not just at a station—you’re standing on one of the original threads in South Australia’s railway tapestry.
