About Ethelton
Ethelton Railway Station sits on the historic Outer Harbor line, one of South Australia’s oldest and most significant rail corridors.
- The Outer Harbor railway line first opened in 1856, linking Adelaide to Port Adelaide and forming one of Australia’s earliest railways.
- The extension through to Outer Harbor was completed in 1915, strengthening access to the coastline and port facilities.
- Ethelton station opened in 1916, serving the growing residential community in the area following the expansion of the line toward the coast.
The name Ethelton is thought to derive from Ethel Mary Phillips, daughter of local physician Dr. James Phillips, adding a personal thread to the suburb’s history—one that has quietly endured through the years.
Today, the station continues to serve local commuters, its platforms witnessing the daily rhythm of arrivals and departures as the line carries people between city and coast.
