Geology is Everywhere!   Visit Rocktown in the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA , explore Tafoni Weathering and discover an EarthCache.

 

Overview

This is an EarthCache and has no physical container. The goal is to learn about Tafoni weathering, then visit the site, make observations, and answer the questions below.   If you have any questions, please reach out to me.

Rocktown is located within the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA), and a valid Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass (GORP) or hunting/fishing license is typically required for legal entry on this property.  If you are just visiting for geocaching (and don’t already have a valid GORP, hunting, or fishing license), purchase of a single-day Georgia fishing license may be the least costly way to go (currently $5.00 for Georgia residents and $10.00 for non-residents).  Visit their web site or download their app and get the necessary license prior to driving up here (little or no cell service is available up on the mountain).

Make sure you use the parking coordinates for driving here and then be prepared for a 1-mile (fairly flat) hike to Rocktown and back.  It’s easy to get turned around while visiting, so making sure you have clear coordinates will help you avoid problems.

IMPORTANT: Obey all WMA rules and posted closures. This WMA property has seasonal closures/restrictions during hunting season, including being closed prior to 10 am during turkey season.  Verify the access status of this property on your planned visit date. georgiawildlife.com or call (706) 295-6041.

Make sure you either print off the cache description or download offline data so that you have what you need when you arrive at GZ.

 

Logging Requirements

  1. Observation: At the posted coordinates, observe the tafoni (honeycomb) weathering on the sandstone face at GZ. Describe the pits/pockets (shape and whether they’re clustered/cell-like) and any thin ridges/walls between them. If you notice it, note whether the pit interiors look lighter or darker/stained than the surrounding rock.
  2. Compare the surface area where you find these pits against a nearby area without any pits. What differences, if any, do you notice in rock texture, color, and/or moisture staining?
  3. Based on your observations and the lesson below, give one reason the formation of these honeycomb pits is likely linked to repeated wetting and drying rather than a single crack or a single impact event.
  4. Photo: Post a photo of yourself or a personal item with the Tafoni Weathering clearly in the background.

 

Location

Rocktown lies within the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Walker County. Rocktown’s diverse geological features exist because durable, jointed sandstone has been exposed for millions of years to groundwater movement, chemical reactions, and erosion, allowing multiple weathering processes to operate and overlap on the same rock surfaces. The unique rock formations here also make it popular with rock climbers, so don’t be surprised to see people enjoying that hobby nearby.

 

 

What is Tafoni Weathering?

Tafoni weathering is a pattern of many closely spaced pits that develop on a rock surface.  Honeycomb weathering is also another term often used for the same feature.  The origin of the term Tafoni may be Corsican or Sicilian that means holes, windows, or cavities.  It may also come from the Italian verb tafonare meaning to perforate or to hollow out.  Geologists adopted the word tafoni starting in the late 1800s, initially for weathering observed in granite and sandstone outcrops, but has grown to now applied to any rock exhibiting similar characteristics. 

The pits can be millimeters to several centimeters across and often have thin “walls” between them, creating a honeycomb look. The broader term tafoni is commonly used for cavernous or pit‑like weathering features that form in rock (especially sandstone and granite), ranging from small pockets to larger hollows.

Common characteristics of honeycomb/tafoni weathering:

  • Pits are usually shallow at first and can deepen and merge over time.
  • They often develop on vertical or overhanging faces where water can seep, linger briefly, and then evaporate.
  • Pit clusters may follow moisture pathways (streaks, micro‑fractures) but still look irregular and “cell‑like.”
  • Freshly exposed pit surfaces can look lighter (new sand grains) while older surfaces may be darker or stained from moisture and minerals.

 

How Does Tafoni Weathering Occur?

  1. Water enters the sandstone through pores, tiny cracks, or along bedding surfaces.
  2. As the surface dries, water evaporates and can leave behind tiny amounts of dissolved minerals (salts) or concentrate moisture in specific spots.
  3. Salt crystals (and/or moisture‑related chemical changes) can pry apart grains or weaken the cement holding grains together.
  4. Loose grains detach (often helped by wind, gravity, and rain splash), creating small pits.
  5. Because pits trap moisture and concentrate evaporation along their edges, they can become self‑reinforcing, expanding into honeycomb patterns or larger tafoni pockets.

Because honeycomb/tafoni weathering depends on local moisture, rock composition, surface exposure, and time, it doesn’t develop equally on every boulder face. More than one mechanism can contribute, but the repeated wetting–drying cycle is a common theme.

 

What about Huecos and their Connection to Tafoni

At Rocktown, some tafoni cavities grow far larger than the fine honeycomb patterns seen on many sandstone walls. These enlarged tafoni closely resemble “huecos” (Spanish for holes), a term commonly used by rock climbers to describe rounded pockets in sandstone. For EarthCache visitors, these features should be observed from safe, established areas, as climbing or scrambling is not required to study them.

From a geological perspective, these larger hollows represent an advanced stage of tafoni development. Over time, the same weathering processes that create small honeycomb pits—moisture movement, mineral concentration, and selective grain loss—can enlarge and merge cavities into deeper, smoother hollows. Rocktown is a particularly valuable site because visitors can see a clear continuum, from tiny honeycomb textures to large cavernous pockets, all formed by the same underlying weathering processes acting over different timescales and rock conditions.

 

What Do these Features Tell Us?

Tafoni weathering is a visible example of how landscapes can be shaped by small, repeated processes rather than a single dramatic event. It highlights the role of water movement through porous rock, evaporation, and subtle differences in rock strength — processes that operate on timescales ranging from seasons to thousands of years.

At Rocktown, tafoni textures add a “micro‑landscape” to the larger boulder maze. The same sandstone that fractures into blocks can also be sculpted at the grain scale, showing how physical and chemical weathering can work together.
