Steventon #178 - Steventon War Memorial (Officially Known as War Memorial #2552 ~ Steventon)

The Steventon War Memorial is a stone cross located at the corner of Hanney Road and the High Street in Steventon, Oxfordshire. It was unveiled and dedicated by the Archdeacon of Oxford to commemorate local residents who died in the First World War.

1. History and Commemoration

  • Origins: Built in 1920s, the memorial originally honored 33 men from the parish who died during the Great War (1914–1918).

  • Second World War: Following WWII, the names of eight additional residents who died between 1939 and 1945 were added to the memorial's base.

  • Current Significance: The memorial remains a central point for the village's annual Armistice Day ceremonies. In a modern tribute, many names recorded on the memorial have been used for road names in new village developments.

2. Structure and Design

  • Type: It is a 12-foot tall stone cross set on a base and a square plinth.

  • Awards: In July 1999, it was recognized as the "Best kept in Oxfordshire".

Please also note:

Please bring your own pen, and open & close the cache lid carefully so the cache and log book can survive longer. You might need a tweezer to help retrieve the log paper.

Please also replace exactly as found due to obvious reason, and please be careful with the possible thorns, stinging nettles, and overhead tree branches! Long sleeves, trousers, and gloves are recommended.

Thank you and enjoy GeoCaching!
