Geocache Description:

The sea turtle sculptures on the Victoria Parade foreshore, Thursday Island (Waiben) were created by Elefantus, a Cairns-based sculptor known for large-scale public metal artworks in Far North Queensland.

Positioned along the waterfront near Engineers Wharf, this piece sits in a place of constant movement—where vessels come and go, linking the outer islands, the mainland, and the wider Torres Strait. Engineers Wharf has long been an important working point for the island, supporting marine services, freight, and the everyday lifeline of inter-island travel.

Standing nearby, Mr Turtle watches over the harbour in quiet strength, reflecting the deep cultural and environmental connection between the Torres Strait people and sea country. Turtles hold profound significance in local lore, symbolising guidance, endurance, and the rhythm of life between land and sea.

After finding the cache, take time to explore the foreshore. You’re right across the road from Gab Titui Cultural Centre, home to incredible local art, storytelling, and cultural heritage. There’s plenty more art to see and explore on TI—enjoy the walk and the stories along the way.
