Geocache Description:

A walk along a old railway line next to a river. Ground is flat and path is generally quite wide. Please be aware that this path is shared use. This cache forms part of a series along the ‘Old Railway’ near Milnathort.

A New Beginning? - Cache #1 is located not far from the old railway station in Milnathort, roughly 200m to the West of this cache, which to this day still has the old wooden platforms. This cache marks the beginning of the walk along the old railway line. Enjoy!

The old railway through Milnathort was part of the Kinross and Fife Railway, a modest but 19th-century single line that linked rural communities with the wider network in Fife. Opened in 1858, it ran between farming districts and market towns, carrying passengers, livestock, and goods at a time when railways were transforming everyday life. Milnathort itself had a small station that served as a local hub, with sidings and facilities that supported nearby mills and agriculture. The timber platforms are still there to see today!

But like many rural railways, its fortunes declined in the mid-20th century as road transport became dominant. Passenger services ended in 1964, and the tracks were eventually lifted, leaving the route to fade back into the landscape. Today, much of the old line can still be traced in embankments, tree-lined paths, and quiet walking routes around the area.
