This Geocache marks the location of the Auburn/Placer County Hospital and adjoining Pauper's cemetery. This cache is a little tricky and hidden in plain sight! The coordinates should get you there, and bring you to a secondary fence with a gate, from outside you can look at the old pauper's cemetary, though only two headstones remain. BYOP. This is part of the Haunted History geocaching series.
The hospital was where the parking lot is now and was built in 1855, it served the community including indigenous peoples and was open until 1974. The adjoining pauper's cemetary was the final resting place of people who did not have family/money to have a proper burial that died within the hospital. Most graves were marked with wooden crosses showing numbers that correlated to hospital records to identify them. Of course most of these markers have fallen apart and are long gone now. A majority of the people buried in the Pauper's cemetary were moved during the 50's and 70's due to the area being dug out to put in what is now interstate 80. Originally 1,700 people found their final resting place outside the hospital in this cemetary. While the majority are gone, some remain with only two having lasting markers made of stone. When walking to the cache you will be above the lot, look down and imagine what it might have looked like as a hospital all those years ago! Please be respectful as this is the final resting place of many people whose names have been lost to time.
Congrats to ToyCruiser for FTF!
