THE LOCATION
The cache is located outside the grounds of the beautiful old Mia Mia Uniting Church.
THE DAY
Blue Switch Day, celebrated on May 2 each year, marks the anniversary of the U.S. government turning off Selective Availability in 2000, immediately improving GPS accuracy for the public. This pivotal decision enabled the creation of geocaching, turning the world into a massive, satellite-guided treasure hunt.
THE TRIBUTE
Dr Gladys West devoted her groundbreaking work to solving a deceptively complex challenge: accurately defining the Earth’s shape.
During the 1960s and 1970s, West played a key role in processing vast amounts of satellite data to model the Earth’s geoid. Because satellite orbits are influenced by the planet’s gravitational field, understanding this shape was crucial for determining precise positions on Earth’s surface. She programmed early supercomputers to analyse oceanographic and satellite measurements, producing increasingly refined models that later became fundamental to the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). When GPS satellites were eventually launched, they relied on these models to convert signals into the accurate coordinates we use today for navigation, mapping, and location-based technology.
Geocaching is built on a beautifully simple idea: using GPS coordinates to locate hidden treasures around the world. Yet behind those coordinates lies an incredibly sophisticated system of satellites, timing signals, and detailed Earth modelling.
Thank you, Gladys West, for your contributions to geodesy and satellite modelling—helping make the precision of geocaching possible 🦋
