LUNCH IN THE CITY XIII - MOORFIELDS
Thursday 14 May 2026
1:30 pm to 2:00 pm
After a long respite, let's have Lunch in the City. This area is often busy at lunchtime so, hopefully, having this Event toward the end of lunchtime, it will be less busy.
All geocachers are welcome to discuss our exxiting hobby and exchange TBs. Bring your lunch as well.
The Origin of Moorfields
This area was once part of the ancient Moorfields, a large open area in the north west corner of the City, which was partly in the City of London and also outside the Moor Gate. The area is now Finsbury Square and Finsbury Circus and the streets around Moorgate and Liverpool stations.
The origin of Moorfields lie in the wider area described by William Fitzstephen as the great fen, a large marshy area. The marshy conditions seemed to have been created by London's defensive Wall, which acted as a dam, restricting the flow of the River Walbrook.
The Moor part of the name refers to the marshy nature of the area. The wet nature of the area continued until in 1572 drainage schemes were put in place which improved the area.
