I am travelling back up to Cape York with a group from Canberra and will be passing through the Mapoon area.
Mapoon is a remote Aboriginal community on western Cape York and, as far as I can see, there have been no physical geocaches and no previous geocaching event held here. That makes this a rare chance for geocachers travelling through Cape York to meet in a place that does not often appear on the geocaching map.
This is a simple 30-minute roadside geocaching meet-up. The aim is to say hello, meet other travelling geocachers, talk about caching in remote Australia, swap travel stories, and share the experience of visiting a part of the country that many geocachers will rarely get to.
The event will be held outside Mapoon township, approximately 17 km south of Mapoon on the Weipa Mapoon Road. There is no requirement to visit the town to attend this event.
The road is dirt and conditions can vary. A 4WD is essential. Please check current road conditions before travelling and make your own decision about whether the trip is suitable for your vehicle and experience.
Mapoon is open to visitors, but please respect the local community, local rules, and the country you are travelling through. Camping in the area requires the appropriate booking or permit, so please organise that separately if you intend to stay overnight. Travellers may prefer to base themselves in Weipa and drive up for the day, as the event location is about one hour from Weipa.
Where: 17 km south of Mapoon on the Weipa Mapoon Road
When: Sunday 7 June 2026
Time: 11:00 am to 11:30 am
I look forward to meeting any geocachers who are travelling through this rarely visited part of Cape York.
