Harry Oppenheimer Full Service School was established in 1982 to promote inclusive education by accommodating learners with diverse educational needs, including those who require additional academic, physical, or psychosocial support. The school was named after Harry Oppenheimer in recognition of his legacy of supporting education and community development in South Africa.
As a full-service school, it was expected to provide accessible facilities, trained educators, learner support services, and resources to integrate learners with barriers to learning into mainstream education. This aligned with South Africa’s inclusive education policy under the Department of Basic Education.
However, over time the school reportedly no longer functioned fully as a full-service institution. Common reasons schools lose or underperform in this role include inadequate funding, shortage of specialised teachers, lack of assistive resources, infrastructure challenges, and insufficient support services such as therapists or counsellors. When these systems are not sustained, schools may continue operating as ordinary public schools rather than delivering the full scope of inclusive support expected from a full-service model.
I’m Charles, born and raised in Mokopane, with a passion for showcasing the beauty, history, and hidden gems of my hometown and the greater Limpopo region. I noticed that Limpopo has relatively few geocaches, so this initiative is part of my journey to create more opportunities for exploration and discovery. I hope you enjoy these geocaches while learning more about my area and the unique experiences it has to offer”
