Sant'Alessandro
Sant'Alessandro è una piccola frazione del comune di Castronno, in provincia di Varese. Si tratta di un borgo storico immerso nel paesaggio collinare varesino, caratterizzato da un’atmosfera molto tranquilla e da una forte identità comunitaria.
Il nucleo del paese ruota attorno alla storica Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro, la cui esistenza è documentata già alla fine del XIII secolo grazie agli scritti di Goffredo da Bussero. Nel corso dei secoli la chiesa è stata più volte modificata, fino ad assumere l’aspetto attuale: una piccola costruzione con navata unica, abside semicircolare e decorazioni interne novecentesche. Conserva anche una pala d’altare seicentesca dedicata a Sant’Alessandro.
Di fianco alla chiesa si erge il campanile, fino a poco tempo fa con una sola campana datata 1938 chiamata "Geltrude", nel 2014, grazie ad una gara di solidarietà tra le famiglie di Castronno, sono state acquistate altre 5 nuove campane che ora fanno compagnia a Geltrude.
La frazione è molto piccola: negli anni recenti veniva descritta come una comunità di circa 150-450 abitanti, molto legata alle proprie tradizioni. Una delle manifestazioni più sentite è la festa patronale dedicata a Sant’Alessandro, con processioni, celebrazioni religiose e momenti conviviali che coinvolgono l’intero borgo.
Dal punto di vista storico, Sant’Alessandro segue le vicende di Castronno, territorio di origine probabilmente romana e legato nel Medioevo alla pieve di Castelseprio. Il nome “Castronno” deriverebbe dal latino castrum, cioè luogo fortificato o presidio difensivo.
Nei locali della vecchia Scuola Primaria Manzoni ora si è insediata Materia Spazio Libero, in questo spazio, dove ha sede anche la redazione di VareseNews, possono ritrovarsi associazioni, cittadini e imprese.

Sant'Alessandro is a small hamlet in the municipality of Castronno, in the province of Varese. It is a historic village nestled in the rolling hills of the Varese area, characterized by a very peaceful atmosphere and a strong sense of community identity.
The heart of the village revolves around the historic Church of Sant'Alessandro, whose existence is already documented at the end of the 13th century thanks to the writings of Goffredo da Bussero. Over the centuries, the church underwent several modifications until it reached its current appearance: a small building with a single nave, a semicircular apse, and 20th-century interior decorations. It also preserves a 17th-century altarpiece dedicated to Sant'Alessandro.
Beside the church stands the bell tower, which until recently housed only one bell dated 1938, called “Geltrude.” In 2014, thanks to a remarkable display of solidarity among the families of Castronno, five additional bells were purchased and now accompany Geltrude.
The hamlet is very small: in recent years it has been described as a community of around 150–450 inhabitants, deeply attached to its traditions. One of the most heartfelt events is the patronal feast dedicated to Sant'Alessandro, featuring processions, religious celebrations, and social gatherings involving the entire village.
From a historical perspective, Sant'Alessandro shares the history of Castronno, a territory probably of Roman origin and connected during the Middle Ages to the parish district of Castelseprio. The name “Castronno” is believed to derive from the Latin word castrum, meaning a fortified place or defensive outpost.
The premises of the former Manzoni Primary School are now home to Materia Spazio Libero. In this space, which also hosts the editorial offices of VareseNews, associations, citizens, and businesses can come together and collaborate.
