THE QUESTIONS

Go to the cache coordinates :

Question 1 : Identify the two types of travertine used, marked A and the rest of the soil marked B ?

Question 2 : Identify the type of fossil present in large quantities under marked A ?

Photo : take a photo at the memorial without spoiling anything, or in front of one of the many soldiers headstones around the memorial, with an element representing you (ideally your nickname), which you will attach to your log. This photo is mandatory in a accordance with the guidelines when updated on August 25, 2019.

HOW TO VALIDATE THIS EARTHCACHE ?

There is no container to find, nor a logbook, is it an Earthcache ! Just go to the location and answer the questions below. You can stay in "Found it" and simultaneously send me your proposed answers via my profile, either by email or via geocaching.com massaging. In case of problems I will contact you. Logs recorded without answers will be deleted as well as photos showing elements of answers.

LOCATION

The Lieutenant Colonel Hamilton Memorial Park pays tribute to the soldier of the 90th US Infantry Division. This division was positioned between Portbail and Saint-Lô-d'Ourville on the front line in late June 1944.

In July 1944, Edward S. Hamilton was a young officier. Considered a liberator of Portbail-sur-Mer, he was wounded three times. His battalion suffered 127 killed, whose names are inscribed on the memorial wall. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the French Legion of Honor.

TRAVERTINE

Travertine is a specific type of limestone, a terrestrial sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from mineral waters. Its texture is its main distinguishing characteristic compared to more compact limestones or granites. Visually, it displays warm, organic hues, ranging from white and ivory to dark beige, cream, and brown, depending on the mineral impurities present during its formation. This unique blend of color and texture makes it a highly sought-after building and decorative material.

Among the most common types of travertine are :

- Stratified travertine : characterized by pronounced bands, evidence of the progressive deposition of individual layers under varying chemical and physical conditions. These layers can be very thin or highly contrasting, with alternating light and dark bands.

- Porous travertine : contains numerous cavities of varying sizes, formed by the release of gases or the decomposition of organic matter. this rock is lighter and less dense. The cavities can later fill with calcite, giving the rock greater robustness.

- Massive travertine : contains fewer visible cavities and has a more homogeneous appearance. It forms under conditions where CO2 levels and calcite precipitation are more uniform.

FOSSILS

A fossil is the mineralized remains or simple cast of an animal or plant preserved in a sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks thus make it possible to find the natural state and species that existed at different periods.

Among the most common types of fossils we find :

- Bivalves which are flattened molluscs with two shells. They may or may not be axially or concentrically striated. They look like mussels or oysters.

- Gastropods which are molluscs with a more or less elongated twisted shell. They look like cones or shotgun shells.

- Ammonites which are molluscs with a shell shape rolled up in a single plane. They look like rams' horns or snails.
