About Glenthompson Station
Glenthompson Railway Station, opened in October 1877 on the Ararat-Hamilton line, was pivotal to the town's growth, replacing horse-drawn transport for local farming produce.
The station was built as part of the Dunkeld to Hamilton extension, which was completed in 1877, the station buildings are considered significant examples of 1870s Victorian regional railway infrastructure. The station was crucial for transporting agricultural goods and facilitated the growth of industries like the local brickworks established in 1901. Passenger services ceased in 1981, and the line was converted to standard gauge in 1995. The buildings now house the Glenthompson Historical Centre showcasing local history and machinery.
