Welcome to Lindfield Common, a historic green space which dates back hundreds, if not over a thousand years. It would have originally been much bigger, reaching up to the pond and around the bend towards Black Hill.
200 hundred years ago Wiliam Allen, a Quaker and social reformer opened a school at Black Hill, some time later it moved to Lewes Road. While at Lewes Road (now residential), the common was sometimes used for children's exercise. The school now sits further back from the common with its own enclosed playing field on School Lane.
The common is a much used local space being home to Lindfield Cricket Club, tennis courts and football in season. The Bowls Club can also be found just across the road. It is not often deserted, for it is popular with dog walkers, joggers, walkers and families as well. It is the site of Village Day at the end of May and of course the bonfire celebrations on November 5th.
With all of the activities going on and the school nearby you will need to pick your time wisely and engage a certain degree of stealth.
