Geocache Description:

Questions:

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3

Question 4

Anglais

The church in Allinges reveals not only architectural heritage but also allows us to observe granite, an iconic rock of the Haute-Savoie.

Questions:

Q1

Observe the last step leading to the church.

Is the total surface area of the step the same everywhere?

Q2

By carefully observing the rock, can you distinguish several different minerals?

Describe at least two colors or crystals visible in the granite.

Q3

Why are the granite crystals visible to the naked eye?

A: Rapid cooling at the surface,

B: Slow cooling at depth,

C: Transformation under high pressure.

Q4

A photo of yourself, your GPS, or an object representing you (a head shot is not required).

Validation

In accordance with the 2019 guidelines, a photo identifying you is required. Log this cache as "Found it" and send me your proposed answers either via my profile or through the geocaching.com Message Center. I will contact you if there are any problems.

Granite

Granite is a plutonic igneous rock.

This means that it formed slowly deep underground when magma cooled beneath the Earth's surface. This very slow cooling allowed for the formation of large crystals visible to the naked eye.

Granite is primarily composed of:

quartz,

feldspar,

mica.

These minerals give the rock its mottled appearance and high resistance.

Thanks to its strength and low susceptibility to wear, granite is often used in construction: steps, monuments, paving, and facades.

On the steps of this church, it is possible to observe different surface textures. Some areas appear smooth, while others become rough.

These differences arise either from:

• mechanical treatment carried out by humans,

• or from the natural weathering of the rock under the effects of frost, water, and repeated foot traffic.

By carefully observing the minerals and texture of the stone, it is possible to better understand the geological history of granite and its evolution in response to climate.
