Before Pure Oil became part of the Dawes Arboretum story, it became part of America’s roadside culture. As automobile travel grew in the early 20th century, oil companies needed more than fuel to attract customers; they needed trust, visibility, and a recognizable identity. Pure Oil became famous for its clean blue-and-white branding, a look that appeared on stations, signs, pumps, oil cans, maps, matchbooks, and other company materials.
Pure Oil’s most memorable visual legacy was its English cottage-style service station. The company used crisp white walls, steep roofs, chimneys, windows, and bright blue tile to make its stations look friendly and familiar rather than industrial.
That recognizable look is one reason Pure Oil remains important to petroliana collectors today. Petroliana includes vintage gas and oil memorabilia such as porcelain signs, pump globes, oil cans, road maps, service-station photos, uniforms, and advertising.

About the Dutch Fork Wetlands: Dutch Fork Wetlands is a free access, 70-acre natural area at The Dawes Arboretum. It’s a restored wetland and grassland ecosystem with six pools, meadow habitat, boardwalks, flat gravel and grass trails, an observation deck, and a shelter house. It’s a great spot for a quiet walk, birding, wildlife viewing, and seeing wetland restoration in action.
