In 1917, Ohio Cities Gas purchased the Pure Oil Company of New Jersey, bringing the older Pure Oil name into Beman Dawes’ growing energy business. A few years later, in 1920, Ohio Cities Gas officially became The Pure Oil Company, reflecting its shift from natural gas into oil production and marketing.
The name change marked more than a rebranding. It showed that the company’s identity had changed. Pure Oil was now positioned as a broader petroleum company, involved not only in production but also in refining, distribution, and the sale of fuel products to a growing automobile-age public.
Under Dawes’ leadership, the company grew quickly, and Dawes later moved from president and CEO to chairman of the board. In 1929, Beman and Bertie Dawes co-founded The Dawes Arboretum, connecting the success of Pure Oil to the creation of a lasting public landscape.

About the Dutch Fork Wetlands: Dutch Fork Wetlands is a free access, 70-acre natural area at The Dawes Arboretum. It’s a restored wetland and grassland ecosystem with six pools, meadow habitat, boardwalks, flat gravel and grass trails, an observation deck, and a shelter house. It’s a great spot for a quiet walk, birding, wildlife viewing, and seeing wetland restoration in action.
