The Tree Dedication Program is one of The Dawes Arboretum’s most distinctive traditions. Tree dedications are chosen by the Arboretum’s Board of Trustees to honor “individuals or groups of outstanding achievement in the stream of human history, or events of significance to The Dawes Arboretum.” In the early years, a new tree was planted for each dedication; over time, the practice changed to carefully selecting existing trees that show promise for a long and healthy life.
The first recorded tree dedication was for Honorable James M. Cox, former Ohio governor, newspaper publisher, and 1920 Democratic presidential nominee. Cox dedicated a burr oak at The Dawes Arboretum on June 10, 1927. Just five days later, Charles G. Dawes—Vice President of the United States and Beman Dawes’ brother—dedicated a swamp white oak on June 15, 1927. The program has grown into a living timeline of history, with more than 100 tree dedications across the grounds.
Notable honorees and dedicators include figures from aviation, space, sports, military service, conservation, politics, and culture. Among them are Orville Wright, honored with a white oak dedicated by Orville in 1935; John Glenn, who dedicated a sweetgum in 1968; Jesse Owens, honored with a Japanese zelkova in 1973; Jack Hanna, whose Franklinia dedication honored animals on the verge of extinction in 1989; and Jack Nicklaus, who dedicated a northern red oak in 2019.
Other dedications recognize major historical themes and groups, including the Great American Game of Baseball, the Great American Game of Football, the Rainbow Division of the American Expeditionary Forces, George Washington, Johnny Appleseed, Vietnam Veterans, Korean War Veterans, and Ohio Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
