Geocache Description:

It started on September 18, 1777 and lasted for several weeks. The Battle of Saratoga would become the decisive turning point of the American Revolutionary War. The defeat of the British in two distinct battles resulted in an "unprecedented surrender of an entire British army to American forces." A huge boost to Patriot morale and it convinced France to help as an official American ally. The French would provide naval and military support that some say was necessary to secure independence.

Did you know Peebles Island has a connection to this battle? Not far from here and closer to the main trail are remnants of earthen fortifications that were designed to halt British forces.

This area was a "strategic Continental Army encampment and defensive fallback position."
