Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden near a viewpoint on the country road between Rhosgadfan and Waunfawr. It marks the first cache hidden as part of the Taith Cantrefi Cymru series, which aims to showcase the best of Wales by touring each of the medieval cantrefi.

The cantref of Arfon was the heart of the medieval Kingdom of Gwynedd. Its rich, fertile pasturelands and strategic position controlling the Afon Menai helped make the kingdom one of the most successful in Welsh history. Its name means "the land facing Ynys Môn (Anglesey)", so what better location for this cache than a viewpoint overlooking the whole island?

The region stretches from the Yr Eifl mountains, marking the start of Pen Llŷn, to the Afon Cegin east of Bangor. Historically, it was divided into two cymydau: Is Gwyrfai and Uwch Gwyrfai, meaning the land below and the land above the Gwyrfai River, which cuts the cantref in two.

This location has ample parking and is only a short walk from the roadside lay-by. But be warned – I wouldn't recommend wearing shorts!

Taith Cantrefi Cymru

Wales' Cantref Quest

Mae'r celc hwn rhan o daith genedlaethol sy'n dangos y gorau o Gymru drwy daergelcio ym mhob un o’r cantrefi.

Mae cantrefi yn hen raniadau tir a ddefnyddiwyd yn ystod yr oes ganoloesol. Maen nhw’n dal yn amlwg heddiw, gan rannu Cymru yn ôl nodweddion naturiol fel mynyddoedd ac afonydd, yn ogystal efo gwahaniaethau mewn arferion a thafodieithoedd lleol.

Mae pob celc yn y daith yn cynnwys rhif. Gwnewch nodyn ohono, gan y bydd cyfuno’r holl rifau yn datgelu cyfesurynnau celc bonws.

Edrychwch ar y rhestr bookmark Taith Cantrefi Cymru i ddarganfod lle mae'r celciau eraill yn y daith wedi'u cuddio.

This cache forms part of a nationwide series showcasing the best of Wales with a special cache in each of the Welsh cantrefi.

Cantrefi are ancient land divisions that were formally used during the medieval period. They are still apparent today, dividing Wales according to natural features such as mountains and rivers, as well as differences in local customs and dialects. The term is derived from cant, meaning “a hundred”, and trefi, meaning “towns”.

Each cache in the series contains a number. Make a note of it, as when all the numbers are added together they will reveal the coordinates of a bonus cache.

Be sure to check out the Taith Cantrefi Cymru bookmark list to discover where the other caches in the series are hidden.
