Geocache Description:

Oraklet välkomnar er till sin EarthCache - Oraklet welcomes you to its EarthCache

SE

In order to log this EarthCache, you must answer the following questions correctly and then send the answers via the message center or my email.

At the coordinates you will find a horizontal quartz vein cutting through the bedrock that forms the base/seat of the Oraklet statue.

1) Feel the quartz vein and the surrounding rock. Is the vein surface smoother or rougher compared to the host rock? What might this indicate about its formation?

2) Estimate how many centimeters the fracture in the rock was that became filled to form the vein. What does this indicate about the process: is the quartz vein older or younger than the surrounding rock?

3) Is the quartz vein pure, meaning composed only of quartz? Justify your answer based on visible colors or color variations in the vein.

Attach a photo to your log, selfie or a photo of a paper with your nickname where your hand is visible, in order to prove your visit to the EarthCache. However, make sure that the answers cannot be estimated from the photograph.

Thanks for the visit!

What will you see at the coordinates?

At the coordinates there is a horizontal quartz vein clearly cutting through the surrounding bedrock at the base of the Oraklet statue. The vein is composed of quartz that filled an existing fracture.

Quartz

Quartz is a common mineral composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). It typically forms when silica-rich hydrothermal fluids circulate through fractures in rocks and gradually crystallize as conditions change. Because it grows as a relatively uniform interlocking crystal mass, quartz often has a smoother surface. Depending on impurities and crystal structure, quartz can appear transparent, white, milky, or sometimes show different colors.

Veins and fracture filling

A mineral vein forms when fluids enter fractures in rock and later crystallize. These fractures act as pathways for mineral deposition. A key geological concept is the principle of cross-cutting relationships: a structure that cuts through another is younger than the rock it cuts. This helps determine the relative timing between the quartz vein and the host rock. Since the quartz vein fills a fracture, the fracture must have existed before the quartz crystallized.
