Geocache Description:

Vilket kaos! - What a chaos!

SE

In order to log this EarthCache, you must answer the following questions correctly and then send the answers via the message center or my email.

At the coordinates, you can observe how decompression and fracture systems have shaped the bedrock and created a chaotic block field.

1) Look around you. In which phase of formation (A, B, or C) is this block field currently in? Why?

2) Classify the continuity of the joints in the area based on the table below. Based on your answer, do you believe the rock has experienced minor or major decompression?

3) Classify the size of the resulting rock blocks in the area. In your opinion, what factor or factors contribute to their appearance?

Attach a photo to your log, selfie or a photo of a paper with your nickname where your hand is visible, in order to prove your visit to the EarthCache. However, make sure that the answers cannot be estimated from the photograph.

Thanks for the visit!

Eftersom is tar mer plats än vatten, spränger frosttrycket gradvis sönder berget. Utvecklingen sker i tre huvudsakliga faser:

Blockstorleksklass Volym (m³)
Mycket små block < 0,01 m³
Små block 0,01 – 0,2 m³
Medelstora block 0,2 – 1,0 m³
Stora block 1,0 – 10 m³
Mycket stora block > 10 m³

What will you see at the coordinates?

At these coordinates, you will observe an impressive geological phenomenon known as a chaotic block field. This is a chaotic accumulation of large, disconnected rock boulders that have been detached from the bedrock. By exploring the area, you will see how the forces of nature, through pressure release and erosion, gradually fracture massive granite, shaping the dramatic and jointed landscape that unfolds before you.

Weathering and Decompression

As magmatic rocks like granite ascend toward the Earth's surface, they undergo structural transformations due to decreasing pressure and temperature. When overlying rock mass is eroded away, the confining pressure decreases (decompression), causing the rock to expand. This expansion generates stress released through fracturing along pre-existing zones of weakness, creating joints (fractures along which no significant displacement has occurred). Greater decompression leads to more intense fracturing, which results in shorter, denser fracture networks (lower continuity).

Formation of Chaotic Block Fields

A chaotic block field is an accumulation of large, disconnected rock boulders. This phenomenon is a direct result of decompression and mechanical weathering driven by physical agents. Rain and water penetrate deep into the joints, and during cold periods, this water freezes into ice. Since ice occupies more volume than water, the frost pressure gradually wedges the rock apart. The process develops through three distinct phases:

Phase A (Fracture Network): Expansion from decompression causes a regular joint system to develop, characterized by parallel and perpendicular fractures cutting through the rock.

Phase B (Rectangular Blocks): As these fractures are widened by water and frost wedging, the rock mass separates into distinct, rectilinear, and isolated rectangular blocks.

Phase C (Rounding): Weathering and erosion agents attack the corners and edges of the blocks more aggressively due to their higher surface area exposure. Over time, the sharp rectangular shapes are lost, becoming increasingly rounded boulders.

Joint Classification by Continuity

Continuity describes the areal extent of a joint on an exposed rock face, quantified by measuring the length of the fracture trace:

Continuity Class Length (meters)
Very low < 1 m
Low 1 – 3 m
Medium 3 – 10 m
High 10 – 20 m
Very high > 20 m

Block Size and Frequency

The spacing and frequency of the joint sets directly control the final dimensions of the blocks within the block field. The volume of the separated blocks can be geotechnically categorized into the following size classes:

Block Size Class Volume (m³)
Very small blocks < 0.01 m³
Small blocks 0.01 – 0.2 m³
Medium blocks 0.2 – 1.0 m³
Large blocks 1.0 – 10 m³
Very large blocks > 10 m³
