   Landhuizen van Willemstad

Als je op Curaçao rondrijdt kun je er niet aan ontkomen. Waar je ook bent, je komt altijd wel ergens een landhuis tegen. Bruine richtingborden wijzen je vaak de weg. De landhuizen zijn verspreid over het hele eiland. Vaak waren het statige grote woonhuizen, maar er zijn zeker ook uitzonderingen.
In de landhuizen woonden vroeger de eigenaren van plantages. De plantages, die nodig waren om de bevolking te voorzien van de noodzakelijke levensbehoeften, ontstonden nadat de West-Indische Compagnie het eiland in de tweede helft van de 17e eeuw verdeelde onder particulieren. Een groot aantal landhuizen is nog bewaard gebleven. Je vindt ze buiten de stad en liggen vaak bovenop een heuvel; daardoor had de eigenaar goed zicht over zijn plantage. Tot de meest bekende landhuizen behoren Knip, Ascencion, Chobolobo, Ronde Klip en Dokterstuin. Die verkeren nog allemaal in goede staat. Het meest bezochte landhuis is echter de ruïne van Zorgvliet, in het Christoffelpark. Het plantageleven bleef tot het eind van de 19e eeuw op Curaçao bestaan. Niet alleen plantages hadden een landhuis. Welgestelde burgers uit de stad hielden er vaak een buitenverblijf op na, gelegen net buiten de stad. Ze hadden daar een tuin, waarop het nodige werd verbouwd. Ook zo'n buitenverblijf werd een landhuis genoemd. Door de aanleg van woonwijken en industriegebieden zijn die landhuizen inmiddels ingesloten door bedrijfspanden en woonhuizen. Hierboven zie je foto's van elf landhuizen. Overal is slechts een deel zichtbaar. Deze elf landhuizen verkeren gelukkig in goede staat. Alle foto's zijn in zwart-wit afgebeeld. Op iedere foto staat ook een getal. Verder zie je ook een kaart van het eiland, met daarop een rode cirkel. Dit is de omgeving van de Schottegatweg Oost (ringweg). De elf landhuizen en de cache liggen allemaal binnen die cirkel. Naast deze elf zijn er nog meer landhuizen gevestigd binnen de cirkel. Die zijn voor deze cache echter niet van belang, maar het is zeker de moeite waard om die eens te gaan bekijken.

De opdracht:
In de onderaan de listing vermelde lijst met extra waypoints vind je de coördinaten van slechts acht landhuizen. Die landhuizen zijn per auto allemaal goed bereikbaar, maar bij sommige mag je niet voor de deur parkeren en moet je dus elders een parkeerplekje vinden. Als je lopend op zoek gaat, neem dan vooral veel water mee. Ga naar de acht waypoints en zoek uit welke van de elf foto's bij dat landhuis hoort. Noteer vervolgens het bijbehorende getal. De som van die acht getallen levert de waarde X op. Die heb je nodig voor het bepalen van de eindcoördinaten. Neem zelf een pen mee.

   Plantation houses of Willemstad

When driving around the island of Curaçao, it's impossible to miss them. No matter where you are, you'll always come across a "landhuis" somewhere. Brown directional signs often point the way. These former plantation houses are spread across the entire island. They were often stately, large residences, though there are certainly exceptions. The plantation houses were once home to the owners of the island's plantations. These plantations, which were essential for supplying the population with basic necessities, came into existence after the Dutch West India Company divided the island among private individuals in the second half of the 17th century. A large number of these houses have survived to this day. You'll find them outside the city, often perched on top of a hill — giving the owner a clear view over his plantation. Among the best-known plantation houses are Knip, Ascencion, Chobolobo, Ronde Klip, and Dokterstuin, all of which are still in good condition. The most visited, however, is the ruin of Zorgvliet, located in Christoffel Park. Plantation life on Curaçao persisted until the end of the 19th century. Not only plantations had a landhuis. Wealthy city residents often maintained a country retreat just outside town, where they kept a garden and grew various crops. These retreats were also referred to as landhuizen. Due to the development of residential neighborhoods and industrial areas, many of those houses have since been surrounded by commercial buildings and homes. Above you can see photos of eleven plantation houses, each showing only a partial view. Fortunately, all eleven are in good condition. Every photo is displayed in black and white, and each one includes a number. You will also see a map of the island with a red circle marked on it. This indicates the area around the Schottegatweg Oost (ring road). All eleven plantation houses and the cache are located within that circle. There are additional plantation houses within the circle beyond these eleven, but they are not relevant to this cache — though they are certainly worth a visit.

The assignment:
In the list of additional waypoints at the bottom of the listing, you will find the coordinates of just eight plantation houses. All of them are easily accessible by car, though at some locations parking directly in front is not permitted, so you'll need to find a spot nearby. If you're exploring on foot, make sure to bring plenty of water. Visit the eight waypoints and determine which of the eleven photos corresponds to that particular plantation house. Note the associated number. The sum of those eight numbers gives you the value X, which you will need to calculate the final coordinates. Bring your own pen.
