De vuurtoren van Kaap Sint Marie is één van de vier vuurtorens op het eiland Curaçao. De andere zijn geplaatst bij Noordpunt, bij het Riffort in Otrabanda en bij Oostpunt (Punt Kanon), het niet toegankelijke oostelijke deel van het eiland. En natuurlijk is er ook de vuurtoren op Klein Curaçao, die misschien wel de meest bekende vuurtoren in de omgeving is. Net als alle andere vuurtorens op Curaçao heeft Kaap Sint Marie niet een stenen constructie zoals je op deze listing ziet. Dit is een zes meter hoge metalen stellage, met een lamp die elke zes seconden twee keer flitst. De lamp heeft een bereik van negen zeemijlen (ruim 16,5 km). Het uitzicht vanaf dit punt is fenomenaal.
Het rif is een populaire spectaculaire locatie voor drift- of bootduiken, die alleen geschikt is voor ervaren duikers, omdat er een sterke stroming staat. De duiklocatie is alleen toegankelijk per boot.
Hoe kom je ter plaatse
De cachelocatie is alleen te voet, via twee verschillende routes, bereikbaar.
• Trail 1
De eerste is de mooiste, maar ook de meest uitdagende. Een wandeltocht met een lengte van circa 8 kilometer (heen en terug). Alleen te voet te doen. Je moet dan minimaal op 3 uur rekenen en het trail is niet een egaal vlak pad. Iets om goed rekening mee te houden. Het trail (waypoint T1) begint bij de bekende flamingo parkeerplaats langs de Weg naar Sint Willibrordus. Je hebt daar een schitterend uitzicht over de zoutpannen (saliña's) waar tientallen flamingo's te aanschouwen zijn, o.a. vanaf de observatietoren. Het trail loopt o.a. langs de monumentale kalkoven Fòrnu di Kalki, dat herinnert aan de productie van kalk uit koraalstenen en schelpen. Maar je loopt ook langs de kustlijn. Als je voor deze route kiest, doe dat dan vooral niet op het warmste moment van de dag, neem vooral veel drinkwater mee, smeer je goed in met zonnebrandcreme, draag beschermende kleding (waaronder een hoed of pet) en draag goede stevige schoenen. Badslippers zijn een absolute no-go.
• Trail 2
De tweede manier om bij de cache te komen is via Coral Estate. Daar is wel een 24/7 beveiliging aanwezig. Dat betekent dat je alleen via een bewakingspost het terrein van deze estate op kan. Verblijf je zelf niet in een van de villa's of in het resort, dan ben je verplicht om een ID bij de slagboom te tonen. Heb je geen ID, dan wordt je niet toegelaten. Houd er rekening mee dat er hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook gevraagd zal worden naar de bedoelingen van je komst. (Advies: Vermeld niet dat je voor geocaching komt.) Parkeer je auto op een veilige plek in de buurt van het trail, dat begint bij het aangegeven waypoint T2. Het is dan in totaal circa 1,5 kilometer lopen naar de cache en terug. Badslippers worden ook hier afgeraden.
De cache
Ga naar de vuurtoren. Daar vind je het antwoord op twee eenvoudige vragen die beantwoord moeten worden.
1. Met hoeveel bouten zit de mast van de vuurtoren vast op de betonnen ondergrond? Het antwoord is A.
2. De mast is geschilderd in rood en wit. Hoeveel banen in de kleur rood zie je tussen de betonnen ondergrond en het onderhoudsbordes bovenaan de mast? Het antwoord is B. (De hiernaast afgebeelde foto is bewerkt.)
Je vindt de cache bij N 12°11.(A-B-2)B(A-2), W 069°03.(B+1)A(A-B-2). Let op: de nabijgelegen kustlijn is hier stijl. Ga dus niet te dicht naar de rand. De cache ligt op voldoende afstand van de rand.

The lighthouse of Kaap Sint Marie is one of four lighthouses on the island of Curaçao. The others are located at Noordpunt, near the Riffort in Otrabanda, and at Oostpunt (Punt Kanon), the inaccessible eastern part of the island. And of course there is also the lighthouse on Klein Curaçao, which is perhaps the most well-known lighthouse in the region. Like all other lighthouses on Curaçao, Cape Sint Marie does not have a stone lighthouse like the one you see on this listing. It is a 6 meter (20 feet) high metal structure, with a light that flashes twice every six seconds. The light has a range of nine nautical miles (just over 16.5 km / 10 miles). The view from this point is phenomenal.
The reef is a popular and spectacular location for drift or boat diving, suitable only for experienced divers due to the strong currents. The dive site is accessible by boat only.
How to get there
The cache location can only be reached on foot via two different trails.
• Trail 1
The first one is the most scenic, but also the most challenging: a hike of approximately 5 miles round trip (8 km). It can only be done on foot. You should allow at least three hours, and the trail is not a smooth, even path — something to keep in mind. The trail (waypoint T1) starts at the well-known flamingo parking area along the road to Sint Willibrordus. From there, you’ll have a stunning view over the salt flats (salinas), where dozens of flamingos can be seen, including from the observation tower. The trail also passes the historic lime kiln, Fòrnu di Kalki, which is a reminder of lime production from coral stone and shells. Part of the route follows the coastline as well. If you choose this route, avoid going during the hottest part of the day. Bring plenty of drinking water, apply sunscreen generously, wear protective clothing (including a hat or cap), and make sure to wear sturdy footwear. Flip-flops are absolutely not recommended.
• Trail 2
The second way to reach the cache is via Coral Estate. There is 24/7 security on site, which means you can only enter through a guarded checkpoint. If you are not staying in one of the villas or at the resort, you will be required to show an ID (passport) at the gate. Without ID, you will not be allowed entry. Keep in mind that you will most likely also be asked about the purpose of your visit. (Advice: Don't mention that you are there for geocaching.) Park your car in a safe location near the trailhead, which begins at waypoint T2. From there, it is about a 1-mile (1.5 km) walk to the cache and back. Flip-flops are absolutely not recommended.
The cache
Go to the lighthouse. There you will find the answers to two simple questions that need to be solved.
1. How many bolts secure the lighthouse mast to the concrete foundation? The answer is A.
2. The mast is painted red and white. How many red bands can you see between the concrete foundation and the maintenance platform at the top of the mast? The answer is B.
