The oldest news about this church can be found in the "Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani” by Goffredo da Bussero, a detailed list of all the churches of Lombardy drafted at the end of the 13th century, where we read:" Lezedum Plebs loco Montebelo ecclesia Sancti Micaelis et Santi Nazzarii”. It then cited on this occasion also the Church of San Nazario, demolished because decaying in the 16th century by the order of St. Charles Borromeo, following his visit of 1574.
In 1630, due to pestilence raging across North Italy, at the initiative of the parish priest John Besozzi was temporarily transformed into a hospital (lazzaretto) to accommodate the many sick. The September 29, 1631, as vow by the end of the plague, was carried out by a pilgrimage to the Church, and since then in this period is always celebrated his feast.
In 1683 it was started the first restoration, completed in 1727. It is presumed that in this period was decorated the apse with the fresco still visible today.
In 1883 was equipped again with hospital, in view of the epidemic of cholera but province of Varese remained unscathed.
In 1896 new restorations were made, mainly concerning the roof, the windows and the internal whitening. The small bell tower, destroyed in Napoleonic times and deprived of Bell, was rebuilt in 1910. New renovations were made in 1927.
In 1964 was found a memorial stone, that as a result of studies is an altar of Celtic or late period-Roman. This indicates that prior to the construction of the Christian church there was already a building used for pagan worship. The altar is currently displayed at the left of the entrance.
The west wall fresco depicting the Deposition was painted in 1980 by painter Brunella from Gavirate.
On the hill above the Church, was built in 1969 a monument in memory of the fallen in World War II, from which you can admire the view of Laveno, the Lake and the mountains of Piedmont.
If you arrive at the cache drive, you can safely leave it in front of the Church. Even if the little gate at the monument is closed, you are authorized to pass at the side: the park is always open.
