The Formation of the Ship Rock and the Sea ArchThe west coast of Rhodes is famous for its rough seas and strong winds. At Fourni Beach, the waves of the Aegean Sea crash into the cliffs with high energy. Over thousands of years, marine abrasion (the mechanical wear caused by the hydraulic action of waves and grinding pebbles) has sculpted this coastline. The reason why unique structures like the prominent Ship Rock and the Sea Arch (Hole in the Rock) exist is differential erosion:The cliffs are not made of uniform rock. They consist of alternating layers of softer sandstone and harder sedimentary strata. The relentless waves target weak spots such as fissures, tectonic joints, or softer rock layers first. When waves hollow out a softer layer at sea level while the upper layer remains stable, a sea arch is formed.Eventually, the roof of such an arch collapses due to gravity, leaving behind isolated stone pillars in the water, known as sea stacks. The "Ship Rock" is a prime example of such a stack.

Hydraulic action: Waves crash against the coast, compressing air in cracks and forcing the rock apart. Abrasion: Waves transport material which rubs against the cliffs, wearing them away. Attrition: Rocks and pebbles carried by waves smash into each other, becoming smaller and rounder. Solution (corrosion): Sea water dissolves certain types of rock like chalk and limestone.

Question 1: Which types of weathering are likely acting in combination here? Is there any evidence of salt weathering? Question 2: Why does "Ship Rock" remain standing while the surrounding material has already been eroded away? Question 3: In your opinion, how will "Ship Rock" change in the future? Describe the subsequent stages of weathering and erosion. Logging Requirement: Please take a photo of yourself—or a personal item—with Ship Rock in the background.
