On April 4, 1932 Florence Murray Clark became the first woman to summit Mt. Washington by dog team. It was her third attempt that year and her first attempt going solo. A family friend, Bob Monahan, was at the summit to greet her. Prior to this achievement, only one dog sledder, Arthur T. Walden, had succeeded in making the trip.
Florence Murray was born on April 25, 1900 in Mamaroneck, New York. She became interested in mushing (using a team of dogs to pull a sled or rig) from her neighbor Ed Clark who she later married. She and her husband moved to New Hampshire from Mamaroneck in order to raise and train huskies. Florence and Ed were the founders and owners of a roadside attraction, “Ed Clark’s Eskimo Sled Ranch.” They had 2 sons, Edward and Murray.
Florence died on Feb. 22, 1950 at the age of 49 of tuberculosis.
