Welcome to the Venetian Lagoon, more precisely to the fascinating landscape around Lio Piccolo in the north of Cavallino-Treporti. Away from the bustling sandy beaches of the outer Adriatic coast, a completely different, quiet world opens up here: an intricate system of tidal channels and shallow salt marshes. This EarthCache takes you to one of the most fragile and dynamic ecosystems on our planet – the so-called Barene. Here you can experience firsthand how the interplay of ebb, flow, finest sediments, and specialized vegetation has shaped a unique geomorphological landscape and continues to alter it to this day.
[IT] Introduzione

[DE] Geologische Erklärung: Was sind Barene?
[EN] Geological Explanation: What are Barene?
The Barene (singular: Barena, commonly referred to as salt marshes) are characteristic, flat landforms of the inner lagoon. On average, they rise only about 20 to 40 centimeters above the mean sea level. This means that they remain exposed during normal tidal cycles (low and high tide) but are completely submerged during exceptionally high tides (Acqua Alta).
Their formation is a textbook example of a **low-energy sedimentary environment**. While high-energy coastal currents transport sand along the outer coast of Cavallino, only the finest suspended matter – clays, silts, and organic particles – enters the protected lagoon through the tidal inlets. As the flood tide pushes into the intricate network of the lagoon, its velocity drops towards zero. During these moments of slack water at high tide, the tiny particles settle and deposit onto the seabed.
However, this purely physical process is not enough to stabilize the Barene permanently. This is where the **biogenic component** plays a crucial role. The Barene are densely covered with halophytes (salt-tolerant plants like glasswort or sea purslane). Their root systems bind the loose sediment, while their stems and leaves slow down the water flow during high tides, accelerating the deposition of new suspended particles. It is a delicate equilibrium: if the sea level rises too quickly or if the supply of sediment from rivers is insufficient, the vegetation dies, and the marsh erodes. Today, the Barene are also heavily threatened by anthropogenic (human-induced) wave action from motorboats, which creates sharp, vertical erosion edges along their banks.
