In 1986, a midwestern city set a then world record for releasing 1.5 million balloons at once, setting a then world record. However, this event proved to be deadly, as the volume of balloons resulted in traffic collisions, environmental damage and worst of all, impeded the rescue efforts for two men who fell overboard in Lake Erie. In the end the event cost the organizers more money than it cost to put on, and the world record was broken a few years anyway.
