Geocache Description:

Welcome one and all to Fairbank!

Originally the site of Fairbank Village (est. in 1835), it all started as a single family farm, which branched off into a farming community, with their own school, post office, then taverns and hotels. By the 1880's this are considered Toronto's suburbs, and the Beltline Railway connected the area to the city of Toronto by 1889, the same year the currently oldest structure in the area was built - the Fairbank Methodist Church (Now Fairbank United Church).

Over time, transportation routes connected this part of town to the rest of the city, with the Oakwood Streetcar and the Eglinton subway station (1954) coming in to further drive the communities growth over time. The Village became part of York township, which became the Borough of York in 1966, and since then has developed as a hub of jobs and sericves, owing to its connections as a fairly central neighbourhood in the city.

Finally, in 2011, after the prior plan for an Eglinton subway from 1994 was cancelled by the Harris government in 1995, a new transit line began under the Eglinton Crosstown brand. It stretches from Mt. Dennis to the west, and to Kennedy to the east, and just opened in February of 2026. There's 2 entrances to the station here - one on the North-west corner, and the main entrance and plaza at the south-east corner.

This has been a station I have looked forward to having open for a long long time, since both the bus lines in this area (the Dufferin and Eglinton bus) crossed paths here and are/were among the busiest routes in the city.

The cache is fairly simple here, and in a slightly less busy spot along this stretch. P)lease be aware of your surroundings here, as this is still a well travelled route in the area.

About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

This area has had its challenges, in part due to the extended construction timeline of the Crosstown.and remains rather challenged in socio-economic standards, but otherwise has a
