Ancienne cité des comtes d'Auvergne devenue épiscopale au XIIe siècle, Billom possède un cœur médiéval préservé avec ses maisons à pans de bois et ses fenêtres à meneaux. Ce patrimoine témoigne d'un riche passé à la fois religieux, intellectuel et surtout commercial.
Avec le quartier de Saint-Cerneuf, celui de Saint-Loup constitue l’autre poumon spirituel de la ville de Billom. Jusqu’à quatre couvents vont s’établir autour d’eux et modeler le paysage architectural local. L’arrivée du 1er collège des Jésuites de France en 1555 va ainsi donner son dynamisme intellectuel à la cité. Cela lui permet de rayonner localement et nationalement afin d’accélérer son développement.

A former city of the Counts of Auvergne, which became an episcopal see in the 12th century, Billom boasts a well-preserved medieval heart with its half-timbered houses and mullioned windows. This heritage testifies to a rich past that was religious, intellectual, and above all, commercial.
Along with the Saint-Cerneuf district, the Saint-Loup district forms the other spiritual heart of the city of Billom. Up to four convents were established around them, shaping the local architectural landscape. The arrival of the first Jesuit college in France in 1555 gave the city its intellectual dynamism. This allowed it to exert its influence locally and nationally, accelerating its development.
