Birdwood was one of the six stations on the Mount Pleasant railway line, a spur from the Adelaide Murray Bridge line, which opened in 1918. This was the same year that the village of Blumberg changed its name to Birdwood because of anti German sentiment. At 71km, train travel was a circuitous way to get to Adelaide, but at the time in inauguration motor vehicle ownership was low. This station and the others along the line were closed March 4, 1963. The disused rail corridor has been incrementally converted into the Amy Gillett Bikeway, now with only Birdwood to Mount Pleasant remaining to be completed.
