A Prímás-sziget a Duna esztergomi szakaszánál található. A belvároshoz legközelebb elhelyezkedő, észak-dél irányba húzódó sziget. Hossza körülbelül 2,7 km. Tőle nyugatra, folyik a Duna főága, keletre, és északra az úgynevezett Kis-Duna, hivatalos nevén a Prímás-szigeti mellékág.
A Palkovics-pad közelében, a Duna partján a szakirodalom sokáig egy négy saroktornyos római castrum maradványiról számolt be, azonban egy 1953-as ásatás szerint a romok egy Gizella királyné által alapított bencés kolostor maradványai a 11. századból, a Szűz Mária templom és kolostor. Maradványait, és a kolostor kertjében lévő temetkezési kápolna alapfalait a hajóállomástól 200 méterre, délre tárták fel.
Eredetileg két különálló szigetből állt (a Prímás- és a tőle északra fekvő Vízivárosi szigetből), amik között lévő csatornát a 19. században feltöltötték, ezzel kialakítva a mai szigetet. Az 1850-es években nagyfokú tereprendezését, szintezést végeztek a szigeten. A mai Gőzhajó utca környékén volt egykor a prímáskert, valamint a magyar és a német hajóállomás.
A szigeten számos sportpálya van, itt van az otthona a sokszoros bajnok Esztergomi Vitézek Suzuki rögbicsapatának. Az északi, beépített részén pedig több intézmény is működik, mint például a Suzuki Aréna, Aquasziget Esztergom.
Az északi csücskén, a Duna és a Kis-Duna összefolyásánál áll az 1935. október 6-án felavatott országzászló, ahol emléktábla emlékezik meg arról, hogy Rákóczi Ferenc ott pihent meg Esztergom bevétele után. Egyedülálló módon később ugyanezen a helyen fordult meg Kossuth Lajos és Széchenyi István is.
A sziget déli vége külterület, ez a rész máig őrzi az ártéri zöldterület jellegét.
A keleti parton húzódik a Gesztenye fasor nevű sétány, ezen a Kis-Duna ágon yachtkikötők sorakoznak. Nyáron vadlibák, vadkacsák lepik el, a Kis-Duna–ágon az utóbbi években a hattyú is megtelepedett. A környék rovarvilága szintén gazdag.

Prímás Island is located on the Esztergom section of the Danube River. It is the island closest to the city center and extends in a north–south direction. Its length is approximately 2.7 km. To its west flows the main branch of the Danube, while to the east and north runs the so-called Little Danube, officially known as the Prímás Island side branch.
Near Palkovics Bank, on the Danube shore, scholarly literature long reported the remains of a Roman castrum with four corner towers. However, excavations conducted in 1953 revealed that the ruins were actually the remains of a Benedictine monastery founded by Queen Gisella in the 11th century, namely the Church and Monastery of the Virgin Mary. The remains, together with the foundation walls of a burial chapel located in the monastery garden, were uncovered about 200 meters south of the boat station.
Originally, the area consisted of two separate islands: Prímás Island and Víziváros Island to the north. The channel between them was filled in during the 19th century, creating the present-day island. In the 1850s, extensive landscaping and leveling works were carried out. The area around today's Gőzhajó Street was once home to the Primate’s Garden, as well as the Hungarian and German boat stations.
The island contains numerous sports facilities and is home to the highly successful Esztergomi Vitézek Suzuki rugby club, multiple-time national champions. Several institutions are also located in the built-up northern section of the island, including Suzuki Arena and Aquasziget Esztergom.
At the island’s northern tip, where the Danube and the Little Danube converge, stands the national flag monument inaugurated on 6 October 1935. A memorial plaque commemorates the fact that Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II rested there after the capture of Esztergom. Remarkably, the same location was later visited by both Lajos Kossuth and István Széchenyi.
The southern end of the island remains undeveloped and still preserves the character of a floodplain green area.
Along the eastern shore runs the Gesztenye Fasor (Chestnut Promenade), beside which a series of yacht marinas line the Little Danube branch. During the summer, the area is populated by wild geese and ducks, and in recent years swans have also settled along the Little Danube. The insect life of the surrounding area is likewise rich and diverse.
