At last Pete and Kevin reached The Sea Dog's Pipe, completing Captain Redthorn's route exactly as the old pirate had done so many times before. There they finally discovered the answer that had puzzled travellers for years. Redthorn had never hidden treasure. He had never concealed a secret map, a lost fortune or a chest of gold. He simply loved this corner of the countryside. The villages, the footpaths, the views, the stories, and the people he met along the way were reason enough to keep returning. Every time he came ashore, he walked the same route because it reminded him that adventures could be found anywhere, not just on distant oceans. Pete stood quietly for a moment as he looked back across the landscape they had crossed. Kevin perched on his shoulder and nodded. "So the treasure was the journey?" he asked. Pete scratched his beard thoughtfully. "Aye," he replied. "Though a little treasure at the end would've been nice too."
