UPDATE (6/14/26): Hyde Park Canyon road has now been signed No Motorized Vehicles. It is a considerable hike to reach the access waypoint for this cache (formerly a parking waypoint.) The terrain has been increased accordingly.
With a name like “Whine and Cheese”, I had to see what this trail was all about. I placed this cache where I found out. If I were riding a mountain bike, I would whine! Do you dare ride it?
This section of trail is one way clockwise, probably for the benefit of mountain bikes, so the best approach is from the Sharidean’s Loop trail. There’ll be some easy bushwhacking. I suggest parking at the waypoint for the closest access to the trail. Go upcanyon (east) when you first hit the trail. It will veer west shortly and ascend gradually through trees. Go west (right) when you reach the one-way sign. (Don’t miss my Sharidean’s Roses cache, just a short hike from this point.) This is the start of the “Whine and Cheese” spur. Watch out for mountain bikes!
If you are on foot, once you find the cache and are looking for a way back to the road, you might find it safer to disregard the one-way rule and retrace your steps on the trail, given how narrow and steep the way is from this point. That way you can see any riders coming and they can see you ahead -- a whole lot better up to this point than after it!
The canyon road is unpaved and bumpy. Passenger cars should be able to manage it with care, at least to the parking waypoint. I don’t recommend trying it when it’s wet. Be sure to close the canyon gates after you pass them (there are two), even if you find them open.
