Didcot GeoCache Series 

After our recently placed GeoCache Series at Great Western Park, Didcot, we decide to place a few more caches in other parts of Didcot and surrounding villages, in order to honour local heros, and to reflect our rich local history, stories and heritage. Didcot #229 - Station Road

Station Road in Didcot is a highly prominent, historic gateway street that connects the modern town center directly to the mainline Didcot Parkway Railway Station. Developed originally by the Great Western Railway Company in 1848, it serves as a central hub for transport, parking, local commuting, and residential housing.

1. Transport and Rail Access

• Didcot Parkway Station: Positioned right on Station Road, it offers rapid, direct mainline services to London Paddington, Bristol, Wales, and Oxford.
• Bus Interchange: Located right outside the station on Station Road, providing regional connections via routes like the X2, X32, X34, and X35 operated by the Oxford Bus Company.
• Bicycle Hire: Brompton Bike Hire docks are situated directly outside the front of the station concourse.

2. Heritage and Conservation

• Historic Railway Housing: The western side of the road features iconic Edwardian worker terraced houses built by the railway company in 1904, displaying distinct Queen Anne/Georgian architectural styles.
• Conservation Area: Because of its deep links to Britain's industrial history, the street is protected under the Didcot Station Road Conservation Area status to preserve its traditional character.
• Didcot Railway Centre: Located immediately adjacent to the station off Station Road, this 21-acre living museum showcases historic steam locomotives and vintage Great Western Railway architecture.

3. Modern Developments

• Mixed-Use Regeneration: The local council has approved plans to redevelop sections of the Station Road Car Park into a modern, mixed-use hub featuring new employment offices, housing, and integrated green walls.
• Didcot Central Corridor: This zone is a key focus of the county's wider infrastructure scheme to improve cycling paths, pedestrian access, and reduce transit congestion through town.

Please also note: 

Please do not park your car along Station Road or any adjacent roads as they are permit holders only. Please use the recommended car park instead.

Please bring your own pen, and open & close the cache lid carefully so the cache and log book can survive longer. You might need a tweezer to help retrieve the log paper.

Please also replace exactly as found due to obvious reason, and please be careful with the possible thorns, stinging nettles, and overhead tree branches! Long sleeves, trousers, and gloves are recommended.

You do not need to enter any private land or cross any fence.
