Geocache Description:

  • excellente résistance au gel ;
  • très faible altération par les intempéries ;
  • stabilité des couleurs grâce aux émaux vitrifiés ;

Enameled Lava: When Rock Becomes a Durable Information Medium

In front of you stands an orientation table made of enameled lava. Despite its name, this rock does not originate from any recent volcanic activity in the Bugey region. It is generally made from volcanic lava stone quarried in central France, cut into slabs, and coated with vitrified enamel that is fired at very high temperatures.

Volcanic lava possesses several properties that make it particularly suitable for orientation tables and other outdoor installations:

  • Excellent resistance to frost and freeze-thaw cycles;
  • Very low weathering when exposed to the elements;
  • Long-lasting colors thanks to the vitrified enamel coating;
  • Exceptional durability in mountain environments.

These characteristics allow the inscriptions, maps, and illustrations to remain legible for many decades, even under harsh climatic conditions.

The Geological Setting of Innimond

The village of Innimond is located on a limestone plateau in the Bugey region of eastern France. These sedimentary rocks were deposited in ancient seas millions of years ago and were later uplifted during the formation of the Alps.

Rainwater becomes slightly acidic as it absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and soil. Over time, this water slowly dissolves limestone, creating a landscape known as karst topography. Karst areas are characterized by fissures, underground drainage systems, caves, sinkholes, and other dissolution features. The Innimond plateau provides a good example of this type of geological environment.

From this viewpoint, located at an elevation of approximately 1,050 meters (3,445 feet), visitors can enjoy panoramic views over the Bugey region, the Rhône Valley, and, on clear days, the Alps and even Mont Blanc.

EarthCache Tasks

To log this EarthCache, send the cache owner the answers to the following questions:

  1. Carefully examine the orientation table. Describe the visible texture of the enameled lava. Is it smooth, rough, or irregular?
  2. Observe an exposed edge or side of the table (if visible). Does the rock appear to contain small cavities or vesicles that are characteristic of volcanic rocks?
  3. Why is enameled volcanic lava particularly suitable for a permanent outdoor installation exposed to mountain weather conditions? Name at least two relevant properties.
  4. Observe the surrounding landscape. What visible clues suggest that the area is dominated by limestone rather than volcanic rocks?
  5. (Optional but recommended) Take a photograph of yourself or a personal item with the panorama in the background, without revealing the answers to the questions.
  6. "Log this cache as "Found it" and send me your proposed answers either via my profile or via the geocaching.com Message Center, and I will contact you if there is a problem."
