CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF GEOCACHING EVENTS IN EUROPE
Am 07.07.2001 fand das ERSTE EUROPÄISCHE GEOCACHING-EVENT statt – organisiert von Giorgio & CATW. Sie planten, irgendwo in der Nähe von Stuttgart zu grillen, und entschlossen sich, einen offiziellen Event-Cache (Southern BBQ | GCEA9) daraus zu machen. Damals gab es nicht allzu viele Geocacher im Süden Deutschlands, daher war die Teilnehmerzahl überschaubar. Dennoch wurde bis spät in die Nacht gegrillt und in Leinfelden-Echterdingen wurde Geocaching-Geschichte geschrieben.
Auf den Tag genau 25 Jahre später feiern wir an den Original-Listingkoordinaten diesen Geocaching-Meilenstein mit einem BBQ-Event. Wir treffen uns auf der Grillwiese im Echterdinger Wald am Dienstag, 07.07.2026, ab 17:30 Uhr – wie damals bis Open End.
Bring dein Essen/Grillgut und deine Getränke mit und feier mit uns. Es wäre schön, wenn du dich vorher per Will Attend ankündigen könntest. Bei leichtem Regen kann man sich unterstellen.
On July 7, 2001, the FIRST EUROPEAN GEOCACHING EVENT took place—organized by Giorgio & CATW. They planned to have a BBQ somewhere near Stuttgart and decided to turn it into an official event cache (Southern BBQ | GCEA9). Back then, there weren’t too many geocachers in the South of Germany, so the number of participants was manageable. Nevertheless, the BBQ went on late into the night, and geocaching history was made in Leinfelden-Echterdingen.
Exactly 25 years to the day, we’re celebrating this geocaching milestone with a BBQ event at the original listing coordinates. We'll meet at the barbecue area in Echterdinger Forest on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, starting at 5:30 p.m. until the open end—just like back then.
Bring your food to grill and drinks and celebrate with us. We would appreciate it if you could log your Will Attend in advance. In case of light rain, there is shelter available.

07.07.2026: Nach einem Tipp eines Eventteilnehmers und einer intensiven Recherche in der Geocaching.com-Datenbank steht fest, dass „Southern BBQ“ nicht nur das erste Event in Deutschland, sondern auch das erste Event in ganz Europa war. / Based on a tip from an event participant and extensive research in the Geocaching.com database, it is now clear that “Southern BBQ” was not only the first event in Germany, but also the first event in all of Europe.
