About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breathtaking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

About Harlin Station

The historical Harlin Railway Station, located in the Somerset Region of Queensland, served as a vital rural transit hub on the historic Brisbane Valley branch rail line.  The town and station were named after Charlotte Harlin, the wife of John Dunn Moore, who owned the nearby Colinton pastoral property.  The station officially opened on 22 November 1910. It was part of the line's fifth stage of development, extending 27 kilometres from Yimbun to Linville.

It was built to tap into the rich timber resources of the Brisbane River Valley and to transport livestock and local dairy produce to major ports and city markets.

In 1941, Queensland Railways added a crossing loop at Harlin. This allowed two trains travelling in opposite directions to pass each other on the single-track network safely. The station operated under a dedicated Station Mistress until October 1963, when the position was formally withdrawn as passenger demand declined.

Harlin was a crucial stop for early "milk trains" collecting dairy products from regional farms for transport to the condensery at Toogoolawah.  Just south of Harlin, a stalled milk train was rear-ended by a goods train. This event led locals to famously dub the nearby bridge the "Milk Train Bridge".

The final regular steam train on the entire Brisbane Valley line passed through Harlin on 29 November 1969, marking the end of a 59-year era of rail transport to the region.

Regular train services ceased on the branch line in 1989, and the line was completely closed by 1993.

The original station building and low platform were ultimately removed from the site. The empty corridor sits directly behind what is now the Harlin Roadhouse and Harlin Hotel.

Today, the station footprint forms part of the 161 km Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. The area serves as a popular rest stop, giving hikers and cyclists access to the heritage-listed Harlin Rail Bridge (opened 1910) and the historic Yimbun Tunnel (opened 1912) just down the trail.

I rode from Harlin to Blackbutt, then back to Linville.  How far did I travel?
