Geocache Description:


Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster. Its reappearance in the pre-dawn sky marks the start of the Māori New Year.

Matarikis Three Core Principles are

  • Remembrance: Honoring those who have passed.
  • Present Celebration: Gathering with whānau (family) and feasting.
  • Future Planning: Planting crops and preparing for the year ahead

Come and watch the dawn on Matariki Holiday with NZTravellers at Maeratai. The official sunrise is 7:32 so will see you all there at the end of the Maeratai wharf which will offer specactuar veiws of the rising sun.

There are local cafes that you can grab a coffee or even breakfast if you so desire after the event. These cafes are Geodog freindly so feel free to bring them as well. NZTravellers Geoday Max will be in attendance... he loves meeting new freinds!
