Geocache Description:

Question 2.

Question 3.

Justifiez votre reponse

Question 5.

 THE CAVITIES OF PILGERFELSEN

For this EC, you will need a compass and a protractor. A phone with an app will also work very well.

This rock exposes one of the geological layers of the Vosges sandstone, the t2a layer, which has several stages:

GEOLOGY OF T2A

From top to bottom, it consists of:

-The upper dolomitic breccia bank (Dolomitbriickelbank), 0.2 to 0.5 m thick. It forms the upper boundary of the intermediate layers.

-The Upper Intermediate Layers (approximately 25 m) occur as thick, massive, and irregular beds of sandstone.

-The Upper Violet Zone (Obere Dolomitbrockelzone). Thickness of 0.5 to 1 m. A zone of predominantly violet color interrupted by yellowish, greenish, or whitish flecks and mottling.

-The Lower Intermediate Layers (approximately 35 m)

GEOLOGICAL PERIOD OF LAYER t2a

System: Triassic
Series: Lower Triassic
Subunit: Upper Buntsandstein
Map notation: t2a = Intermediate Layers.

In absolute age, the Intermediate Layers date from the end of the Lower Triassic, approximately between 249 and 247 million years ago.

PILGERFELSEN STAGE

We will focus more specifically on the lower intermediate layers.

Lower Intermediate Layers: Thick beds of hard, dark wine-red sandstone, speckled with black by numerous nodules and specks of manganese oxides.
At the surface, these nodules are hollow, revealing characteristic cavities not observed at any other level.
The bedding is most often oblique, frequently cross-bedding, and rarely horizontal. A constant feature is the presence of uniformly small (average length 20 mm) quartz (95%) and quartzite (5%) pebbles, often exhibiting rounded aeolian shaping.

HOLE FORMATION PHENOMENON

Evolution of the cavities from left to right

The formation of cavities requires the interaction of several factors:

- a porous rock that allows the circulation of water and dissolved ions. - A surface exposed to the sun (aided by the wind) which promotes the evaporation of water from the rock.

- Crystallization of salts between the grains.

Crystal growth creates pressure that breaks the initial assembly of the rock grains.

It is important to know that the shape and arrangement of the cavities depend on the porous zones at the scale of the laminae and follow the bedding of the sandstone. The bedding represents the different layers or strata of the sandstone.

DIP

In geology, dip is the orientation of a plane or surface. A dip measurement combines the directions and inclinations of a plane.

QUESTIONS

Question 1: What factors are necessary for the formation of cavities?

Question 2. By examining this rock, and especially the lower part:

Define the average size of the cavities and their distribution within the rock.

Are they aligned?

Do they follow a particular direction? If so, which one?

Question 3. Determine the dip of the planes of the cavities.

Direction of the axis using a compass and inclination relative to the horizontal.

Question 4. Using the description above concerning the formation of the cavities, we can propose two hypotheses:

Hypothesis 1: Cavities linked to manganese nodules that have emptied.

Hypothesis 2: The phenomenon of alveolation.

Which hypothesis do you think is the most likely? Justify your answer.

Question 5. A photo of yourself, with or without your head, or of your username is required.

You can log your find without waiting for our confirmation, but you must send us your answers at the same time, either by email through your profile or via the geocaching.com Message Center. If there are any problems with your answers, we will let you know.
